SGV GOLF - Competitive Games

General Information

This section provides general information about competitive games played at SGV golfing events. Some competitive games are only played during 9-Hole Executive Golf, some are only played during 18-Hole Championship Golf, and some are played in either event, as categorized below. Play in SGV events is governed by the USGA rules, which can be found under Playing on the usga.org website.

Golf scorecards and prize money are turned in to the Golf Coordinator at the after-golf social. Winners are determined and announced, and prize money is distributed accordingly. Prize money for absent players is placed in dated envelopes and given to the Executive Golf Director or 18-Hole Golf Director to hold and distribute within 30 days at subsequent golf socials or the next monthly club meeting and social. After that, the envelopes are given to the Club Treasurer, who will deposit the expired, uncollected prize money into the Club Treasury bank account to be available for official SGV Club activities.

Hole-in-One Award

Any SGV player who makes a hole-in-one during an SGV Club golf event will receive a monetary prize award of $100. This will be in addition to any prize money received by winners in the competitive game played during that event. The player will be recognized and receive this cash prize at the next monthly SGV Club meeting and social.

Ghost Rules

When there is a threesome in a competitive golf outing, a "ghost" will be used in most cases:

  • Each of the 3 players will get a second attempt at each shot on 1/3 of the holes, to be done in rotation. Player 1 will play a second ball on holes 1, 4, 7; Player 2 on holes 2, 5, 8; and Player 3 on holes 3, 6, 9. If playing 18 holes, this same rotation will be used on holes 10 through 18.
  • The minimum tee shot requirement must also be fulfilled by the ghost unless otherwise specified in the game's rules.
  • The second ball hit by the ghost player is always the ghost ball.

Note:  If The Villages Tee Time System assigns a non-SGV player to a 3-person SGV team, it may not be possible to use a ghost player. Also, 2-person teams cannot use a ghost player and are not eligible to participate in the prize competition for team-scored events. In these situations, players do not contribute to the prize fund and play for the fun of it.

Scramble and Shamble Games

When playing a Scramble, the ball selected to play on subsequent shots may be moved no more than:

  • On the fairway or in the rough, one club length from where the ball landed. The ball's "lie" may not be improved, i.e., if it is in the rough, it cannot be placed in the fairway and vice versa. The ball may not be moved closer to the hole.
  • On the green, a maximum of six inches from where the ball landed.

When playing a Shamble, ONLY the ball selected as the best drive may be moved in accordance with the two bullets above; all subsequent shots are played from where the ball landed.

9-Hole Executive Golf Competitive Games

1-2-3 GAME

1-2-3 GAME

1-2-3 GAME

All players hit their own ball from tee to green for each hole. The team score is calculated by taking only one best score on holes 1, 4, 7; two best scores on holes 2, 5, 8; and three best scores on holes 3, 6, 9. Each player (including the ghost player) must use his/her score for at least 3 holes for the foursome game total. The second ball hit by the ghost player is always the ghost ball.

SCORING:

Add up 1-2-3 scores for all 9 holes and subtract that total from the double handicap for that course. (This will give you a +/- score to double par and evens out the difference between teams playing par 3 and par 4 courses.)

BINGO

1-2-3 GAME

1-2-3 GAME

All players hit their own ball from tee to green for each hole and record their individual 9-hole scores. A random card drawing occurs for score numbers. Prize money is then divided among the number of players with the matching scores.

FEWEST PUTTS

FEWEST PUTTS SHAMBLE

FEWEST PUTTS SHAMBLE

All players hit their own ball from tee to green for each hole. Prizes are awarded for the fewest putts. The lowest putting scores by gender win prize dollars. The ball must be on the putting surface to begin the score count. Once the count begins, all strokes taken are counted as a putt even if you putt off the green and have to chip back onto the putting surface. Both your actual score and number of putts will be recorded on the scorecard, although only the number of putts are totaled for your score.

     For example:

  • If you par the hole after taking 2 putts, record your score: 3/2 or 4/2; with 1 putt: 3/1 or 4/1.
  • If you hole the ball with a total score of 6 (par 3 hole) or 8 (par 4 hole) after 2 putts, record your score: 6/2 or 8/2; after 3 putts: 6/3 or 8/3 or whatever number of total strokes taken to hole the ball.

Note: This game follows the "double par" maximum strokes rule. Once you have taken 6 strokes on a par 3 (8 on a par 4) and have not holed the ball, you must pick up your ball and record a 4-putt penalty. Your score would be recorded 6/4 or 8/4. You may not record a lesser number of putts attempted before picking up the ball.

FEWEST PUTTS SHAMBLE

FEWEST PUTTS SHAMBLE

FEWEST PUTTS SHAMBLE

All players tee off. The team agrees on the best tee shot and all players hit from that position for the next shot. Each player then plays his/her own ball for all subsequent shots until the ball is holed. Prizes are awarded for the fewest putts. The lowest putting scores by gender win prize dollars. The ball must be on the putting surface to begin the putting score count.

Note: Three of the 4 players must use their drive for at least 1 hole. If a ghost player is used, the ghost is considered 1 of the 4 players. If on the 9th hole, 1 player has not used a drive, the team may choose the best drive of all 4 players. The ghost is only used for tee shots. The ghost does not hit the ball on any subsequent shots or during putting, and no score is recorded for the ghost. The second ball hit by the ghost player is always the ghost ball.

INVERSE POKER

9-HOLE SHAMBLE - Individually-Scored

9-HOLE SHAMBLE - Individually-Scored

Prize money is distributed by gender. The scores for all 9 holes are used to form a 5-card poker hand. The highest is five 2's, then five 3's, then five 4's. Note that four 4's & one 3 beats four 4's & one 5. The order of rank is: 5 of a kind; 4 of a kind with additional low score; then a full house (3 of one number and 2 of a different number); then a straight of number sequence.

Birdies are "wild cards" and are given more weight in determining the best scores. For example, a score of four 3's and one birdie would beat a score of five 3's. A hole-in-one is counted as two birdies.

The order of best scores is:

  1. Five 2's
  2. Five 3's made with four 3's & one birdie (each additional birdie would beat this score accordingly)
  3. Five 3's without a birdie
  4. Five 4's made with four 4's & one birdie (each additional birdie would beat this score accordingly)
  5. Five 4's without a birdie

All players tee off. The team agrees on the best tee shot and all players hit from that position for the next shot. Each player then plays his/her own ball for all subsequent shots until the ball is holed. Each player's individual score is recorded on the scorecard. Prize money is distributed by gender. Three of the 4 players must use their drive for at least 1 hole. The ghost is considered 1 of the 4 players. If, on the 9th hole, 1 player has not used a drive, the team may choose the best drive of all 4 players.

Note: If a ghost player is necessary, the ghost is only used for the tee shots. A ghost does not hit the ball on any subsequent shots or during putting, and no score is recorded for a ghost. The second ball hit by the ghost player is always the ghost ball.

9-HOLE SHAMBLE - Team-Scored

9-HOLE SHAMBLE - Team-Scored

9-HOLE SHAMBLE - Team-Scored

All players tee off. The team agrees on the best tee shot and all players hit from that position for the next shot. Each player then plays his/her own ball for all subsequent shots until the ball is holed. Each player's individual score is recorded on the scorecard and the team score is recorded by hole as +/- to par. (For example: players have a 4-3-5-4 on a par 3 hole. All 4 scores total 16. Team par would be 3 x 4 players or 12. Score for that hole would be +4). The players' +/- scores per hole are then added together and divided by the number of actual players to determine the team score.

Note: If a  ghost player is necessary, the ghost is only used for the tee shots. A ghost does not hit the ball on any subsequent shots or during putting, and no score is recorded for a ghost. The second ball hit by the ghost player is always the ghost ball.

For 9-hole golf, 3 of the 4 players must use their drive for at least 1 hole for the team total. If a ghost is used, the ghost is considered 1 of the 4 players. If on the 9th hole, 1 player has not used a drive, the team may choose the best drive of all 4 players.

PUTT-YOUR-OWN SCRAMBLE

PUTT-YOUR-OWN SCRAMBLE

PUTT-YOUR-OWN SCRAMBLE

All players tee off. The team agrees on the best tee shot and all players hit from that position. This continues until the team decides which ball (either ON the green or NEAR the green) is the one that will be used to try for the best score. This means a ball NEAR the green can be used even if one or more balls are ON the green. Each player hits from that spot, and then presumably all the balls will be on the green. The team agrees on the best ball location, and each player then putts his/her own ball from that mark and continues to putt until the ball is holed. Each player's score for the hole is recorded (counting all approach and putting strokes). In the event that a player holes the ball from off the green, the entire team records that player's score. At the end of the round, the players' scores are totaled and divided by the number of players for the team score. For a threesome, a ghost is used in rotation for the round, but only until it's time to start individual putting. The ghost's score is NOT RECORDED on the scorecard. The second ball hit by the ghost player is always the ghost ball.

For example, Harry's foursome gets three balls on the green on their second shot using normal Scramble rules. The team agrees on the best ball to putt. Harry putts it in, giving him a score of 3. Rex and Joyce each hit 2 putts to hole the ball, so their score is 4. Abby has to putt 3 times, making her score 5.

For 9-hole golf, 3 of the 4 players must use their drive for at least 1 hole for the team total. If on the 9th hole, 1 player has not used a drive, the team may choose the best drive of all players. If a ghost is used, the ghost is considered 1 of the 4 players. This game follows the "double par" rule. If you have taken 6 strokes on a Par 3 or 8 strokes on a Par 4, you must pick up your ball and record a 4-putt penalty.

For 18-hole golf, each player (including the ghost in a threesome) must use his/her drive for at least 3 holes for the team total. The maximum recorded score for any player for any hole is 3 over par.

SCRAMBLE

PUTT-YOUR-OWN SCRAMBLE

PUTT-YOUR-OWN SCRAMBLE

All players tee off. The team agrees on the best tee shot and all players hit from that position. This continues for all subsequent shots until the ball is holed. For a threesome, a ghost is used in rotation for the round. The second ball hit by the ghost player is always the ghost ball. The ghost must also have the required number of drives used.

For 9-hole golf, 3 of the 4 players must use their drive for at least 1 hole for the team total. If a ghost is used, the ghost is considered 1 of the 4 players. If on the 9th hole, 1 player has not used a drive, the team may choose the best drive of all 4 players.

For 18-Hole golf, each player must use his/her drive for at least 3 holes for the team total.

STEP-ASIDE SCRAMBLE

STEP-ASIDE SCRAMBLE

STEP-ASIDE SCRAMBLE

All players tee off. The team agrees on the best drive, and only the 3 players whose drives were NOT used take the next shot. This continues all the way until the ball is holed. For a threesome, a ghost is used in rotation for the round, and the ghost is considered 1 of the 4 players and must also have the required number of drives used. The second ball hit by the ghost player is always the ghost ball.

For 9-hole golf, 3 of the 4 players must use their drive for at least 1 hole for the team total. If a ghost is used, the ghost is considered 1 of the 4 players. If, on the 9th hole, 1 player has not used a drive, the team may choose the best drive of all 4 players.

For 18-hole golf, each player must use his/her drive for at least 3 holes for the team total, including the ghost.

TWO BEST SCORES

STEP-ASIDE SCRAMBLE

STEP-ASIDE SCRAMBLE

All players hit their own ball from tee to green and record their individual scores. The lowest 2 scores per hole are added together to make the team's score for each hole, with the following requirement:

For 9-hole golf, each player must use their score for at least 2 holes for the team total. If a ghost is used, the ghost is considered 1 of the 4 players.

For 18-hole golf, each player must use his/her score for at least 6 holes for the team total. The maximum recorded score for any player on any hole is 3 over par.

Note: For a threesome in 18-hole golf, the Golf Coordinator will choose a player with an appropriate handicap and add that player's scores to the card at the end of the round before the card is finalized and turned in. No ghost is used during play.

18-Hole Championship Golf Competitive Games

SHAMBLE - Team-Scored (18-Hole)

SHAMBLE - Team-Scored (18-Hole)

SHAMBLE - Team-Scored (18-Hole)

All players tee off. The team agrees on the best tee shot and all players hit from that position for the next shot. Each player then plays his/her own ball for all subsequent shots until the ball is holed. Each player's individual score is recorded on the scorecard. The maximum recorded score for any player on any hole is 3 over par. The players' total scores are then added together and divided by the number of actual players to determine the team score. Each player must have a minimum of 3 drives used for 18-hole golf.

Note: If a ghost player is necessary, the ghost is only used for the tee shots. A ghost does not hit the ball on any subsequent shots or during putting, and no score is recorded for a ghost. Additional rules for using a ghost are described in "Competitive Games - General Information." The second ball hit by the ghost player is always the ghost ball.

123-543 GAME (18-Hole)

SHAMBLE - Team-Scored (18-Hole)

SHAMBLE - Team-Scored (18-Hole)

All players hit their own ball from tee to green for all 18 holes and all individual scores are recorded. The team score is calculated by taking 1 best score on each par 5 hole, 2 best scores on each par 4 hole, and 3 best scores on each Par 3 hole. Each player's score must be used for at least 6 holes for the foursome's 18-hole game total. The maximum recorded score for any player on any hole is 3 over par. For a threesome, the Golf Coordinator will choose a player with an appropriate handicap to level the team, and add that player's scores to the scorecard at the end of the round before the card is finalized and turned in. No ghost is used during play.
