18-Hole Championship Golf events are played on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month. From May through September, outings are scheduled at courses in The Villages. From October through April, outings are scheduled at several area courses within about an hour's drive of The Villages.
Normally, a competitive game is played during these outings. There is a $5 prize contribution collected from each participating player. Golf is followed by a meal, drinks, camaraderie and awards.
An initial email invitation and a last-call message for each outing are sent to membership with information about the venue and competitive game. Sign-up for 18-hole championship golf closes on the Sunday evening prior to the event. At that time, the Golf Coordinator locks the sign-up spreadsheet. Requests to be added or cancelled must be sent to the Golf Coordinator.
Tee times, playing partners, game rules and outing details are sent to the participants via email 3-4 days prior to the event. Tee times are also posted on the "SGV Golf - Tee Times" page. If the event is in The Villages, tee times will also be posted in The Villages Tee Time System.
TEE DESIGNATION
As of April 2020, all men will play from the designated men's tee, and all ladies will play from the designated ladies' tee.
HANDICAPPING
The Golf Coordinator creates balanced foursomes using the players' 18-hole handicaps. Players' handicaps shown in the sign-up spreadsheet come from either the GHIN system (if the player subscribes to the system), or from a handicapping spreadsheet maintained by the 18-Hole Golf Director. If the player has a GHIN handicap, he/she should update it on the sign-up sheet when it changes. If the player does NOT have GHIN handicap, scores from individually scored games are entered into the handicapping spreadsheet to compute the player's handicap, and the SGV 18-Hole Golf Director updates the handicaps on the sign-up spreadsheet as needed. The 10 most recent 18-hole scores are used for this rolling computation.
MAXIMUM RECORDED SCORE
To help speed play during 18-hole outings, the maximum recorded score on a hole will be 3 over par. For example, on a par 4 hole, if the ball is NOT HOLED after 6 strokes, it is picked up and the recorded score is 7. Similarly, for a par 3, the maximum recorded score would be 6. For a par 5 hole, the maximum recorded score is 8. Note that this rule pertains primarily to individually scored games, as it would be very unusual that the scores for a scramble or shamble would necessitate this rule being invoked.
